CONTEXT recently released a market research report that reported that in October and November 2018, sales of printer hardware in Western Europe increased by 3.2% year-on-year.
Sales of inkjet devices are still larger than laser devices, and sales of consumer-targeted inkjet printers are increasing. In fact, in the past two months, sales of consumer printers have compensated for the decline in sales from commercial printers (-13.9%), so the imaging industry is generally on the rise.
Sales of inkjet equipment increased by 5.8% year-on-year, and laser MFPs increased by 3.2% year-on-year, achieving continuous growth. Sales of multifunction printers (MFPs) increased by 5.4% year-on-year. However, single-function printers (SFPs) declined by 6.6% overall, with inkjet SFP sales down 15.1% overall. This trend has officially transformed the transition from single-function devices to multi-function devices.
Sales of inkjet MFPs in October and November 2018 were better than in the same period in 2017. Monochrome and A3 all-in-ones are still the main growth points of the inkjet sector, with sales up 59.7% and 13.7% respectively. The entry-level range (prices up to €400) continues to lead the sale of consumer-oriented MFPs, accounting for 99% of the total, at 6,800 euros. Sales of products at this level of higher price regions also increased significantly. Printers of 150-200 euros increased by 26.4%, printers of 200-300 euros increased by 65.4%, and printers with prices of 300-400 euros increased by 51%. The largest sales growth occurred in the price range of 400-500 euros, an increase of 129.8%.
Sales of laser MFPs increased by 3.2% in the first two months of the fourth quarter of 2018, with consumer-targeted high-performance devices growing by 127.9% and commercial-targeted devices down 16.1%.
Print equipment sales in October and November 2018 were both increasing in several Western European countries, particularly in Italy and the United Kingdom, where sales increased by double digits. In addition to inkjet SFP, Italy is also one of the fastest growing countries in all categories, thanks to Samsung's strong performance: sales increased by 186.6% year-on-year, accounting for 70.2% of the country's market. The growth rates of other brands were: Canon 21.2%, Kyocera 14.6%, Xerox 12.4%, HP 3.4%.
The main reason for the growth of the UK market is HP, with sales growth of 72.1% and market share of 81.4%. Canon and the brothers' brands increased by 43.7% and 27.2% respectively.
But Belgium's growth rate was the highest in the period, with sales up 46.3% year-on-year and revenue growth of 42.4%. Samsung, Epson and Hewlett-Packard were the main reasons for their growth, with sales increasing by 354.8%, 209.8% and 23.8%, respectively, accounting for 78.1% of the country's market.
Finland's sales and revenue both have double-digit growth: sales increased by 22.6% year-on-year, revenue increased by 26.6%, of which Samsung increased by 334.7% and Lexmark increased by 139.8%.
